Frequently asked questions
What is a swim spa and how does it differ from a swimming pool or a jacuzzi?
A swim spa is a compact pool equipped with a counter-current swimming system, advanced filtration and heated water. It offers the possibility to swim and perform aquatic exercises in a much smaller space than a traditional swimming pool. Unlike a jacuzzi or a classic hot tub, the pool is longer and the current is generated by a continuous adjustable flow, specially designed for training. Additionally, many models integrate a dedicated hydrotherapy area or even two separate zones with independently controlled temperatures (swimming in cooler water and relaxing in warm water).
How do I choose the right series and model?
The choice depends on the main objective: family recreation, aquatic fitness, intensive swimming training or a combination with hydrotherapy. Models with water jets are ideal for exercise, aquatic aerobics and recreational use, while propeller or turbine systems (which create a smooth, even laminar current) are recommended for performance swimming. Before deciding, the pool dimensions, useful depth, number of hydrotherapy seats, current strength and the option for one or two temperature zones (Dual Zone) are compared.
Can I do real swimming training in a swim spa?
Yes, provided you choose a model and a current system suited to your fitness level. The adjustable current allows continuous swimming on the spot, without turning at the pool end. For example, Endless Pools® models designed for fitness and performance provide a stable, turbulence-free water flow, with fine adjustment steps (up to 52 speeds). For advanced swimmers, we recommend testing the current and checking the useful width and depth of the pool.
What are the dimensions and weight of a swim spa?
Dimensions range from compact models of 4 metres to generous pools of over 6 metres in length. The total weight – which includes the structure, water and users – can reach 6–10 tonnes. For this reason, the support foundation is sized exclusively based on the total filled weight. Before placing the order, we provide you with the technical sheet of the model, the operating weight and the layout of the access spaces required for service.
How is the above-ground or built-in installation prepared?
• For above-ground installation: A flat reinforced concrete platform is required (usually at least 20 cm thick), designed according to the ground structure and the total load of the equipment. • For built-in or semi-built-in installation: A technical concrete pit is constructed, equipped with a floor drainage system (with a 3% drainage slope) and a rainwater evacuation pump. It is mandatory to keep a free access space for service around the equipment (usually 50 cm on the sides and 1 metre in the technical components area).
What utilities are required for installation?
A swim spa requires a dedicated electrical connection, with a cable sized appropriately to the model's power and a separate circuit equipped with residual current device (RCD) protection, carried out by a certified electrician. You also need a nearby water source for filling with a hose and a safe drainage/water evacuation solution. Indoors, humidity control is mandatory. Exact electrical specifications are determined only based on the final technical sheet of the chosen product.
Can it be installed indoors and used all year round?
Yes, swim spas are designed for use in all 4 seasons. Outdoors, the high-density thermal insulation and the rigid thermal cover maintain water heat and reduce energy consumption even in winter. Indoors, installation requires checking the floor's load-bearing capacity, the space's waterproofing, a safety floor drain and an efficient dehumidification and ventilation system. For long periods of non-use in cold weather, shutting down and winterising are carried out exclusively according to the manufacturer's procedure.
How much does it consume and what influences the running cost?
Consumption depends on the water volume, the set temperature, the insulation efficiency, weather conditions, usage frequency and the energy tariff. Permanent use of the thermal cover and maintaining a constant temperature significantly reduce heat loss. The pumps and swimming systems operate at maximum power only during training, not continuously. The estimated consumption calculation is based on the technical sheet of the chosen model, the type of installation and the usage regime.
How is the water maintained in a swim spa?
Maintenance involves weekly checking and adjusting of the pH, periodic disinfection, filter cleaning and cleaning the waterline. Having a larger water volume and being used for intense exercise, the care routine is adapted to the usage level. Keeping the thermal cover clean prolongs the water's lifespan, and a complete water change is done at longer intervals than for a classic jacuzzi, depending on the chosen filtration and treatment system (chlorine, ozone/UV or salt water).
How is a swim spa delivered and what service is required?
Due to its large dimensions and weight, delivery is planned in detail before dispatch. We check the truck's access route, the manoeuvring space, overhead obstacles (cables, trees) and the operating radius required for the crane. After positioning on the slab, the technical team carries out the connections, filling, operating tests and user training. The cost of the crane and special equipment is confirmed separately in the quote, and service access to the side panels must be kept free throughout the product's lifespan.
