A complete guide to starting up and maintaining hot tubs in spring

Spring is the ideal time to rediscover the pleasure of using your hot tub. The days grow longer, the sun gets stronger and the thought of relaxing in warm water becomes ever more present. At Hidrostyle we encourage the use of the hot tub all year round – for an optimal experience, see our article: „Everything about disinfecting the water in hot tubs”.

If you choose to restart your hot tub with the arrival of spring, here are 10 essential steps that ensure a safe, clean and trouble-free experience.

1. Fill the hot tub through the filters

To avoid blockages caused by air in the pipes, put the hose directly into the filter housing. This significantly reduces the risk of air affecting the priming of the pumps. If you still encounter problems, you can loosen a union slightly to release the air, or start/stop the jet pump a few times.

2. Apply a shock chlorine treatment

After a period of non-use, bacteria can appear in the pipework. A shock chlorine treatment completely disinfects the system and prepares the hot tub for efficient maintenance. It is an essential step, especially after the cold season.

3. Check the drain valve

Before filling the tub, make sure the drain valve is closed and the cap is firmly fitted. Also check the connections in order to prevent water loss or leaks that can appear on first use.

4. Let the hose run for a few minutes

Stagnant water in hoses can contain impurities or bacteria accumulated over the winter. Let it run for a few minutes onto a green area before filling the hot tub, in order to avoid contamination.

5. Clean and check the filters

After filling, clean the filters every 2-3 days, especially in the first weeks. Use special solutions, not just water, in order to remove fine impurities and bacteria. You can buy spare filters for extra peace of mind.

6. Inspect the main components

Examine the condition of the pumps, the heater and the sensors. Look for signs of corrosion, loose wires or cracked pipes. After filling, watch for any error messages and call a technician if you notice anything unusual.

7. Test and balance the water chemistry

Once the water reaches the desired temperature, check the disinfectant levels and the pH. Balanced water means a safe, comfortable hot tub for the whole family.

8. Clean and protect the hot tub cover

Wash the cover with warm water and soap, rinse well and apply a UV treatment. This extends the life of the cover and helps maintain the water temperature.

9. Check your stock of maintenance products

Make sure you have enough products for intensive use: chlorine, test strips, products for balancing the pH, shell cleaning solution and anti-foam. Check whether the products are within date and whether the compacted tablets can still be used.

10. Carry out a deep clean (if necessary)

If the hot tub has been unused for a long time, a deep clean may be needed, followed by repeated filling and emptying. Finish with a shock chlorine treatment for complete sanitisation.

Starting up your hot tub correctly in spring means more comfort, safety and a longer life for the equipment. If you have questions or need maintenance products, the Hidrostyle team is here to help you.
