Swim spas vs hot tubs: which should you choose?

Swim spas and hot tubs differ both in price and in options – here is how to make the right choice for you.

Both hot tubs and swim spas are significant investments and both can bring considerable benefits to your physical and mental state, as well as to your social life. You need to consider three things before deciding which to buy: the budget you have available, how you plan to use it and where it will be sited.

The best swim spas are often designed for physical exercise. Their powerful, adjustable jets give you the option of swimming and doing undemanding cardio exercise and strength training that puts no pressure on the joints. In any case, you can switch off the jets for a spa session, since many swim spas have an area provided for this – essentially, there is a hot tub integrated into the swim spa. In general, swim spas tend to cost more compared with the best hot tubs of similar size, but this varies according to the number of jets and other options available.

Hot tubs, on the other hand, reduce muscle tension and stress. They were designed to deliver experiences of relaxation and unwinding. In general, hot tubs cost less than swim spas, although large models with a sophisticated design can carry a hefty price.

That is why we recommend paying particular attention to where you site the hot tub or swim spa you are about to buy. Siting it requires generous space, whether it is a veranda or a courtyard. Also, if you intend to site it on a platform, check that it is strong enough to support the weight of the swim spa or hot tub.

What is the difference between a swim spa, a Jacuzzi and a hot tub?

The terms „spa”, „hot tub” and „Jacuzzi” are often used interchangeably, but in fact each refers to something different. Here is a mini glossary:

• Swim spa: this is a small pool that uses powerful jets which propel water towards the user, allowing them to swim against the current. The intensity of the swimming current is adjustable, and the jets can be switched off at any time for a relaxation session.

• Jacuzzi: this is the registered name of a corporation with a history of making excellent hot tubs. It is so well known that its name has become synonymous with these products, like Xerox with multifunction printers.

• Hot tub: unlike swim spas, hot tubs are designed for relaxation and are provided with seats. The water is heated and propelled from all sides by powerful jets. At the same time, the water is drained, filtered, reheated and recirculated into the tub.

Hot tub vs swim spa: why not opt for both?

Swim spas often have the shape of a traditional pool, but they are also fitted with jets like a hot tub. These jets generate a current to swim against, with the aim of strengthening muscle groups and increasing endurance. These jets can be adjusted to vary the speed of the swimming current, so that you are continuously challenged as you build ever greater endurance.

Although they are used in different ways, swim spas and hot tubs are often fitted with the same elements, such as high-power jets and water heating options. Because of this, many swim spa manufacturers also make top hot tubs. Some manufacturers even offer 2-in-1 products that have the exercise options specific to a swim spa, together with muscle-release solutions for relaxation and hydrotherapy.
